Solstar Space Co. and NMT Partner to Enhance Spacecraft Monitoring Systems
Solstar Space Co. and NMT Partner to Enhance Spacecraft Monitoring Systems
Solstar Space Company partners with New Mexico Tech (NMT) mechanical engineering professor Dr. Andrei Zagrai under a phase I STTR contract awarded by the Department of Air Force (DAF). The goal of this initiative is to enhance spacecraft communications monitoring systems. More specifically, they look to integrate New Mexico Tech's Structural Monitoring Unit (SMU) with Solstar's Slayton Space Communicators to create a more robust monitoring system. The SMU is designed to increase situational awareness and reduce spacecraft operational costs. Slayton on the other hand enables near real-time command and control through a 24/7 high bandwidth downlink and uplink data relay. By combining their technology these institutions look to provide proactive management, monitoring, and missions support for spacecraft throughout the industry. Learn more here.

Researchers Develop Tendon-Mimetic Hydrogels for Advanced Tissue Engineering
Researchers Develop Tendon-Mimetic Hydrogels for Advanced Tissue Engineering
A cross disciplinary team of physics, mechanical engineering, and electronic engineering researchers in Hong Kong reported the development of tendon-mimetic hydrogels that have the potential be used in advanced tissue engineering to form implantable tissue prosthetics. The creation of these multi-functional hydrogels was entirely inspired by natural human tendons. The tendon-mimetic material features high strength, elastic modulus, and fracture toughness, all key characteristics of natural tendons. The process of creating the tendon mimetic hydrogels primarily consisted of assembling aramid nano-fiber composites and soft polyvinyl alcohol moieties, which together mimic important biological interactions between collagen and proteoglycans in tendons.
