Westinghouse Plans 10 New AP1000 Nuclear Reactors in the U.S. for 2030
Westinghouse Electric Company has unveiled plans to build 10 large nuclear reactors in the U.S., with construction slated to begin by 2030. Interim CEO Dan Sumner announced the initiative during an energy and artificial intelligence conference at Carnegie Mellon University, attended by President Donald Trump and industry leaders.
The planned reactors will be Westinghouse’s flagship AP1000 units, each capable of generating enough electricity to power more than 750,000 homes. According to Sumner, building all 10 would create $75 billion in economic value nationwide and $6 billion in Pennsylvania alone. The announcement aligns with Trump’s recent executive orders to quadruple U.S. nuclear power by 2050, including a call for 10 large reactors under construction by 2030 and a “wholesale revision” of Nuclear Regulatory Commission rules.
This push comes in a sector where growth has been slow. The U.S. has completed only two new reactors in the past three decades, both AP1000s at Georgia’s Plant Vogtle. That project was plagued by $18 billion in cost overruns and a seven-year delay, contributing to Westinghouse’s 2017 bankruptcy. The company has since emerged from bankruptcy under the ownership of Cameco and Brookfield Asset Management.
To avoid past pitfalls, Westinghouse is partnering with Google to integrate AI tools into the construction process, aiming to make AP1000 builds more efficient and repeatable.
The conference, organized by Sen. Dave McCormick, also highlighted over $90 billion in announced investment for data centers and power infrastructure. Learn more about this topic here.
